Lecture on "Conservation and Sustainability of Biological Resources on the Planet Earth: Present and Future"

The Climate Change Research Institute (CCRI) organized Guest lecture in EEC lecture series on World Earth Day 2019. The lecture entitled “Conservation and Sustainability of Biological Resources on the Planet Earth: Present and Future” was delivered by Dr. M. Sudhakar, Director, CMLRE, Cochin, and Scientist ‘G’ Ministry of Earth Science, on 25th April, 2019 at India International Centre, New Delhi. The world's oceans contain about 500,000 to 2 million marine species, bacteria, other microbes and viruses. Today 60% of the world’s major marine ecosystems that underpin livelihoods have been degraded or are being used unsustainably. He said United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 15 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are devoted to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Nearly 80% of marine pollution originates on land and the pollution accompanies most kinds of human activities, including offshore oil and gas production and marine oil transportation.

Dr. (Mrs.) Malti Goel, Chief Executive and President, Climate Change Research Institute (CCRI), welcomed the participants. She gave the background of Earth Day Celebration and said that we have organized an Essay Competition on Environment in Delhi, participated by students of Class X - XII from different schools. Prof. D. P. Agrawal, Chairman, Governing Council, presided over the event and highlighted the importance of Earth Day Campaign. He released the Bulletin ‘Climate SAR’ on Plastic Pollution and Climate Change, Vol. V, no. 2 brought out by the Institute. Guest Speaker Dr. M. Sudhakar on this day presented a copy of the publication on ‘’Taxonomic Discoveries from Northern Indian Ocean’’  to the Institute. School students from class X-XII participated in large number in Guest Lectire.
